The Beginning of the End

Sermon Outline

The Beginning of the End: Luke 24

Intro:

Our very faith rests on these historical facts, this historical man, who died for our sins, and rose from the grave three days later.

We would not have Christianity if Jesus did not rise from the dead.  And that is because it is not simply about a teaching or way of life, but about a real person in real history that accomplished a real salvation.

I. The Surprise of the Resurrection

            A. No one expected the resurrection of Jesus

*Even the disciples didn’t believe at first:

            B. The Jewish understanding of Messiah

            1. The last thing that God’s Messiah was going to do was die.

2. The Messiah was to bring victory over Israel’s enemies and restore the Temple and usher in God’s kingdom of peace.

*If this is what they were expecting then once Jesus had been crucified why in the world would anyone still say He was Israel’s Messiah?

            C. The Jewish understanding of Resurrection

II. The Testimony of the Resurrection

Why does Jesus use the scriptures to explain the resurrection?

A. To show that he was the Messiah of the Scripture

                        Luke 24:26, 44

B. That they might believe

                        Luke 24:6

C. That they might correctly read the Scripture

                        Luke 24:27, 45-47

III. The Hope of the Resurrection

            A. The Resurrected Jesus as the beginning of the New Creation

            I Corinthians 15:20 & Colossians 1:18

            B. The New Creation at work in the believer

2 Cor. 5:14, 15, 17

In the resurrection of Jesus the coming new creation reaches back into the old world.  Now those who trust in Jesus, through the work of the Spirit are given new life and are called new creations.  God is not finished yet, and one day we will be like him in his resurrection, and all things will be made new.
