Sermon Outline

I. The local church is where you serve and love other believers

When you choose to love and serve Jesus you choose to love and serve his people.

The local church is the place we practice love for other believers.

II. The local church is where you commit and submit to both body & elders

1. We submit to a church by committing our time, energy and resources

2. We are to submit to the oversight of the church and its leaders

Hebrews 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

III. The local church affirms your salvation

1. The internal witness (the Spirit)

Romans 8:15-17

2. The external witness (the Church)

Matthew 16:13-19, Matthew 18:15-20, I Corinthians 5:11-13

It is the business of the church to affirm those who belong in the faith.

The basic problematic assumption we have is that individually as Christians we have the authority to conduct our lives apart from the local church. When we do this we ignore the truth that Jesus instituted the church to affirm, guide and give shape to my Christian life and yours.
